Mad World, Redux

Two versions of the same song. The same message though.

Mad World
(Roland Orzabal)

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
And their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
'Cos I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad World

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

Tears for Fears

Gary Jules

Still and all, in a mad, mad world, there is this promise that remains true: "I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly." (John 10:10) It is a promise of hope, of restoration, of abundance and of true joy. It is a promise I take comfort in, for it comes from the only one who is important and the only who should matter.

Hi Sir,

I like this song! Thanks for posting the lyrics. I was in Tower Records a few weeks back looking for the CD of Gary Jules but they don't have it. I guess I just have to look for it elsewhere.

Thank you too for posting John 10:10; it is a good reminder to start my day right.

Hi Sir! I liked the Gary Jules version better, the way he sang it was apt for the mood the lyrics were going for. :) Also this is the first version I heard of the song, from the movie Donnie Darko. The Tears for Fears version sounds more like an upbeat cover/remix, no offense. hehe!

The Tears for Fears version is the original version as the song was written by Roland Orzabal. It is more upbeat because it was released on the crest of the new wave phenomenon when eurorock was dominating the airwaves.

The Gary Jules cover is significant though because it captures the darkness of the lyrics.
